Some journeys never really leave us.

In 1994, a journey through Central America changed the questions I was asking about the world—and eventually the direction of my life.

Apathy to Love is a thirty-year search to understand why some journeys stay with us, how we can engage more deeply with the places we visit, and what happens when we bring those experiences home.

Through one journey and the lessons that followed, the book explores a simple way of approaching travel:

Go Curious. Travel Deeper. Return Differently.

A journey can take us somewhere.

How we engage with it shapes what we bring home.

Apathy to Love explores three ways we engage with a journey:

Or, more simply:

Apathy and Love aren't steps along the way. They are orientations—different directions we can move toward as we encounter ourselves, other people and the world.

It's not a formula for transformation. It's an invitation to become more open to what a journey can offer.

For more than three decades, Jim Michelis has travelled across Latin America, Europe, Asia and beyond—sometimes alone, sometimes with groups, and often without knowing exactly what he would find.

Over time, he became less interested in how many places he could see and more curious about why some journeys stay with us long after we return home.

A traveller and educator, Jim brings a lifetime of journeys, encounters and questions to Apathy to Love—beginning with a 1994 trip through Central America that continues to shape the way he thinks about travel today.

Go curious. Travel deeper. Return differently.
